There is the headstone with one of the settlers name on it, apparently carved by one of his children, in the mainland, showing that is where they went, found recently and authentic. There are no genetic markers in the local Indians (like there are with the Chippewas who were in the Canadian area of the Viking settlement), so it is surmised they eventually perished by starvation and/or Indian attack, probably where the location of some sort of fortification is on the old map. Remains of a fort type structure, rotted away not long after.
