Well, it makes sense. These people were at least as intelligent as we are and they'd see fossils that would make them wonder why a seashell was embedded in a rock hundreds of miles from the ocean. Creation stories explain it just as well as anything, I guess.

Very interesting ... it makes me think of how dinosaur bones are likely responsible for dragon myths. At least the Mayans had the sense to think that life existed long before them and took fossils in a somewhat accurate light.
