Old Classic BBC play.

Saw on Youtube, Nineteen Eighty-Four, the 1954 BBC TV play version of the George Orwell novel of the same name:

This version of 1984 was broadcast as part of the BBC’s Sunday Night Theatre and was adapted by Quatermass creator Nigel Kneale and produced by Quatermass producer Rudolph Cartier.
It starred Peter Cushing as Winston Smith.

Also in the cast are Andre Morell and Leonard Sachs both of whom would later appear in the same Doctor Who serial The Massacre of St Bartholomew’s Eve (1965) starring First Doctor William Hartnell.

When Peter Cushing played Doctor Who in the two 1960s Dalek movies based on the first two Dalek TV stories, Cushing had essentially played an alternative version of the William Hartnell Doctor. It therefore makes it notable for Morell as an actor to have worked with both Hartnell and Cushing.

In between 1984 and his Doctor Who appearance Morell had played Quatermass in the Quatermass and the Pit TV serial obviously producer Rudolph Cartier had remembered his performance in 1984.

Another notable cast member of this version of 1984 but not one who had appeared in Doctor Who was Donald Pleasance. Pleasance later became the first fully exposed actor to play Blofeld in the James Bond film You Only Live Twice.
The visual effects was by Bernard Wilkie with Jack Kine. Wilkie would later work on the first Doctor Who serial in 1963.
Nigel Kneale has delivered a very chilling version of 1984 with standout performances from Peter Cushing and Andre Morell as the main characters.

Peter Cushing was not the only Doctor actor to play Winston Smith in an adaptation of 1984. Second Doctor actor Patrick Troughton had played Winston Smith in the 1965 BBC radio adaptation of 1984.

Funnily enough based on their CVs I noticed that Peter Cushing seems to have more in common with Patrick Troughton than with William Hartnell despite Cushing having played a variation of the Hartnell Doctor in the two 1960s Dalek movies.
