NASA Will Announce Arsenic-Based Life On Earth

Postby Brian » Thu Dec 02, 2010 2:32 pm

Hi, Everyone.

I found this article interesting. Apparently, at 2PM EST, NASA will announce the discovery of a bacteria that substitutes arsenic for phosphorous in its DNA. This is a huge deal, because it means there's a parallel branch of life here on Earth that doesn't contain DNA as we've previously known it. It also means that a lot of extraterrestrial environments we thought couldn't contain life might, in fact, contain life.

This isn't as big as discovery of aliens, for example, but it might give us a hell of a lot more places to look for them. :woo:

Well, considering the whole arsenic thing, I think that'd probably be a bad idea. ;)
