Megaupload's Kim Dotcom refuses to hand over passwords

The Obama administration has been accused of hampering alleged internet pirate Kim Dotcom's bid to fight his extradition to the US by denying him access to his data.

The founder of the filesharing website Megaupload is seeking access to electronic data seized during raids in January.

His lawyer has told the Auckland High Court that the data storage devices are being held by New Zealand police, but that the decision to deny Dotcom access to his own material seems to be coming from the US government.

Dotcom has declined to give authorities the codes to the encrypted data.

His lawyer saying he is only prepared to provide authorities with codes and passwords as part of a judicial process hwich respects Dotcom's rights to access data for his defence and which acknowledges that some of the material is subject to issues of privacy and legal privilege.

He says there is no basis for Dotcom to be refused access to material which could be used for his defence against extradition to the US, where he's wanted on charges of racketeering, money laundering and copyright infringement.

Kim Dotcom, a German national also known as Kim Schmitz and Kim Tim Jim Vestor, is charged by the US with being an internet pirate whose group netted $US175 million since 2005 by copying and distributing music, movies and other copyrighted content without authorisation.

Dotcom says the company offered online storage.

He and three others were arrested on January 20 after armed New Zealand police raided his country estate at the request of the FBI.

Hmm they were legalimate business and piracy on the side.
