Facebook apologises for worst outage in 4 years

Postby sledge » Fri Sep 24, 2010 6:18 am

Facebook says it suffered its worst outage in over four years, with thousands of users locked out of the social networking site this morning.

Facebook says the outage, which is believed to be the third in about 48 hours, is the result of an error in one of the site's automated systems.

Users of the site in Australia said they received error messages when they tried to log on to Facebook about 6:00am AEST.

The outage lasted for at least 2.5 hours for some users.

Facebook has posted an apology to its 500 million users, saying an automated system incorrectly handled an error message on the site.

"The intent of the automated system is to check for configuration values that are invalid in the cache and replace them with updated values from the persistent store," the company said.

"This works well for a transient problem with the cache but it doesn't work when the persistent store is invalid."

Facebook says it has learned "one big lesson" from the shutdown.

"The way to stop the feedback cycle was quite painful - we had to stop all traffic to this database cluster, which meant turning off the site," the company said.

"Once the databases had recovered and the root cause had been fixed, we slowly allowed more people back onto the site.

"We want you to know that we take the performance and reliability of Facebook very seriously."

Hundreds of users have posted comments on the Facebook apology, many of them thanking the social networking website for getting its system up and running again and providing such a detailed explanation of the problem.

Other users took to rival social networking site Twitter to vent their frustration.

Folk need to understand the severity of not being able to get Into Facebook.

I mean... Do these people not understand that we have crops to harvest, fish to feed, bears to tame, pets to feed or they die? My melon crop In Farmville was positively wilting by the time I got In last night. Who do I sue for my failed crops?

Seriously... On a scale of out-rage... Invading Iraq, Out-rage
Straving children... Outrage
Lowland Gorilla's hunted to the brink of extinction.... Out-rage
Pakistan Floods... Out-rage

Not being able to get on Facebook for 2 and half hours..... Minor Inconvienience.
