In 1883 the mint released the "new" nickel...Up until that time the "Shield" nickel was in use

When the Liberty Nickel ( or "V" nickel as most people know it) was first released, it did not have the value stamped on it. Unscrupulous people took advantage of that and gold plated them and passed them off as 5 Dollar gold pieces. A pretty good return for a 5 cent investment. The mint soon relaized the error and placed the words FIVE CENTS on the reverse.....Here was the original design:
