Never quite got the whole trinity thing, myself. The best I can do is guess as to where it went awry.

As Jews, the first Christians were wedded to the idea of a messiah coming who had to fit certain prophesies. So they look at the prophesies, and misinterpret what the whole son of God thing meant, taking it a wee too literally. They also look at Genesis and reinterpret what the author meant by referring to God in the plural. Then, when Jesus ended up dying on the cross, instead of overthrowing the Romans and actually becoming the king of the Jews, the Christians had to come up with an explanation for that, so Jesus became God, who who you can't actually defeat through crucifixion.

It's all very convoluted, but you can paper over it by calling the contradictory aspects miraculous and not understandable on human terms.
