I think if people didn't give religion a free pass that institution would have been shredded long ago. Any other institution violating kids and covering it up at all levels like those fanatical freaks did would have suffered far greater by now.

If we did not have religion to "keep the peace" for the last thousand years or so we would be in a worse position than we are in now as far as morality goes. Is the Vatican responsible for every member under their roof? Yes to a certain extent. Is the Pope personaly responsible for every priest and every action they deemed acceptable, no. Does the good that came from having religion and a strong support system outweigh the bad of the few that abused the system....that will be a question that may haunt us for many years. If the religious doctrine of moral integrity becomes extinct.......what will take its place as a guiding light for moral and selfless giving for our fellow man? In this day and age can Homer Simpson or Kenny from South Park save us? Who or what will be the next Jesus? And do we really need someone to tell us what is right? I can only see dark times for what is right and what is wrong. a fine line for sure in the upcomming future. The problem and the answer for the Pope is policing their own flock today and tossing out the notion that marriage is bad and comming to grips with real life and not clinging to an archaic lifesyle with tenacious claws from hell.

There was a time in the not so far away past that religion was a good thing and people cared more for their fellow man than they did for themselves. The recent spat of child and queer activity in the Catholic monestary can only show that a change is needed in the requirement of a celibate and non-human placement of authority figures in key areas. the Pope really needs to accept all human fidelities and realize that we cannot all be Gods but only instruments of goodwill for each other. The dynasty will fall if he does not realise this and make changes soon. I bet he knows this but does not know how to enact it. He needs to stare at a candle for 24 hrs straight and see the light.

The principles of freedom and respect would have gotten us much farther and with much less trouble had organized religion not been a suppression glue of ignorance. At the time, lacking crucial information and understanding, it was the best we could come up with when trying to explain and deal with with things from diseases and earthquakes to the stars and pregnancy.
